Sports and coverage

Markets cover football, tennis, basketball, ice hockey, American football, baseball and table tennis, plus virtual sports around the clock. Most events are available both pre-match and in-play.
How it differs from Australian bookies
Licensed Australian bookmakers can't take in-play bets online, can't accept credit cards and must offer BetStop and activity statements. Alawin is offshore, so none of that applies: in-play is open on screen and markets can be broader. The trade-off is clear: no Australian regulator, no BetStop and no local dispute body if something goes wrong.
In soccer, 1X2 settles on 90 minutes. In ice hockey it's usually 60 minutes. Choose the to-win market if you want extra time included.
AFL, NRL, cricket and the A-League
Coverage of Australian competitions at international books varies. The big fixtures, such as AFL and NRL finals, State of Origin, Test cricket and the Big Bash, are often listed, while depth on lower leagues and player props can be thin. Check the menu before you deposit if local sport is your main reason for signing up.
| Market | Example | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Head to head | Home side wins | Easy |
| Line / handicap | -12.5 points | Medium |
| Total points over / under | Over 165.5 | Medium |
| Winning margin | Home by 1 to 39 | Medium |
| First goal or try scorer | Named player | Hard |
Football (soccer) markets
For the round-ball game the Premier League, Champions League and A-League are the main draws. Common markets are 1X2, double chance, both teams to score, over/under 2.5 goals, handicaps and correct score. Remember that 1X2 is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties.
Reading odds
Alawin shows decimal odds, the same format Australian bookies use. Odds of 2.50 mean a A$10 bet returns A$25 if it wins, A$15 of which is profit. Implied probability is 1 divided by the odds, so 2.50 is 40%. Add up the probabilities of every outcome and you'll get more than 100%; the excess is the bookmaker's margin.
- Single: one selection, the easiest to control.
- Multi: odds multiply, but every leg has to win.
- System bet: several multis in one, forgives a miss but costs more.
- Cash out: settle a bet early at the amount offered.
Every extra leg lifts the odds but cuts the chance of the whole bet landing.
In-play betting
In-play odds move constantly, and markets suspend briefly for goals, penalties or breaks. Tennis and table tennis are popular because matches are decided point by point. In-play is easy to follow on a phone; see the Alawin app guide.
Staking with fixed units
Plenty of experienced punters stake a fixed unit of one to two per cent of their betting bank on every bet. With a A$300 bank, that's A$3 to A$6 a bet. A losing run then can't wipe you out, and your results are easier to judge.
- Log every bet: event, odds, stake, result.
- At the end of the month, check which sports and markets work for you.
- Don't chase losses on the same night.
- Be careful betting on your own team when emotions are running high.
Reading sport promos
Sport promos have their own terms. Typical ones are minimum odds per leg or per multi, a minimum number of legs and an expiry. Bonus bets usually pay out winnings only, not the stake, and cashed-out bets often don't count. Read the terms first and note the deadline.
Virtual sports
In virtual sports a random number generator decides the result and an event lasts a few minutes. Form and team knowledge don't help, so virtuals are closer to casino games than to real sports betting.
System bets in practice
A 2-from-3 system bet is three doubles. At A$1 per double you stake A$3. If two legs win, one double pays; if all three win, all three pay. The bet forgives one miss, but costs three times a single double. For beginners, singles and small two-leg multis are usually the better way in, because odds and results are easier to follow and to learn from.
Betting responsibly
Sports betting makes it easy to believe knowledge is enough to win. It helps you choose, but it doesn't remove the margin or the after-the-siren goal. Decide before the game how much you can afford to lose, don't raise stakes after losses, and call Gambling Help Online on 1800 858 858 if betting stops being fun. The casino package doesn't apply to sport; see the bonus page.
Verdict
Alawin's sportsbook is handy because it shares a balance with the casino and lets you bet in-play on screen. In exchange you give up every local protection, from BetStop to a regulator. Check coverage of your favourite codes, learn the odds and keep stakes small.
